Court Dismisses ₦5 Billion Copyright Suit Against Sinach, Affirms Her Ownership of Way Maker by Naijatalks: 1:45pm On Aug 1, 2026
Award-winning Nigerian gospel singer Sinach (Osinachi Joseph Egbu) has secured a major legal victory after the Federal High Court in Lagos dismissed a ₦5 billion copyright lawsuit challenging her ownership of the globally acclaimed worship song, Way Maker.

The lawsuit was filed by music producer Michael Oluwole (Maye), who claimed he co-authored and co-owned the song. He sought recognition as a joint creator, a share of the song's royalties and licensing income, and ₦5 billion in damages.

However, Justice A. Lewis-Allagoa ruled that the evidence showed Way Maker had already been written and performed by Sinach before Oluwole was engaged to mix and master the recording for its 2015 commercial release. The court held that the producer was contracted to provide technical production services and was paid for that work, but did not establish any claim to authorship or co-ownership.

The judgment reaffirmed that Sinach is the sole author and copyright owner of Way Maker, bringing an end to the high-profile copyright dispute. The ruling is also being viewed as an important precedent for copyright ownership and creative contributions within Nigeria's music industry.
