Kaduna Demolishes 60-Year-Old Stadium as State Pushes for FIFA-Standard Sports Facility by marshall: 3:21pm On Aug 9, 2026
Senator Shehu Sani has commented on the Kaduna State Government’s decision to demolish the state’s historic stadium, originally built about 60 years ago during the era of the Sardauna, to make way for a new FIFA-standard stadium.

According to Sani, the Kaduna State Government is making a significant investment in sports development, with the broader objective of developing young talents and creating pathways for talented Nigerian footballers to eventually play in Europe and other international leagues.

He described the development as a major opportunity for young people, noting that football has become a global multibillion-dollar industry that Nigeria cannot afford to ignore.
"The Kaduna State Governor has demolished our 60 years Stadium built by the Sardauna and building a new FIFA standard one. The State is investing in Sports with the aim of exporting players to Europe and beyond."

However, the announcement has generated mixed reactions, particularly over whether demolishing the existing stadium was the best approach.

Calls for Financial Prudence

Some commentators questioned why a new stadium could not have been constructed while retaining the old facility.

Johnson Owoicho suggested that keeping both stadiums could provide young athletes with additional training facilities and create another venue for competitions.
"Why not build a second stadium instead and allow both to operate within the state? That would have created more opportunities for the youths to have an alternative training centre and a stage for international competitions."

Others raised concerns about government spending and whether funds allocated to sports infrastructure could have been directed toward other pressing needs.

Healthcare Funding Concerns

One commenter, Jamil Sani, argued that more government funding should also be directed toward healthcare and medical research.

He shared his experience at Zaria Teaching Hospital, claiming that he had to purchase a cannula outside the hospital because it was reportedly unavailable.

His comment sparked a broader discussion about the need to balance sports investment, healthcare, education and other public services.

A Debate Over Kaduna's Sports Future

The new stadium project has therefore opened up a wider conversation about the future of sports development in Kaduna State.

Supporters of the project see the FIFA-standard facility as an investment that could help discover and develop young footballers, attract sporting events and create economic opportunities.

Critics, however, believe the government should carefully consider financial prudence, existing infrastructure and other urgent public needs before committing substantial public funds to major projects.

With football now generating billions of dollars globally, the success of Kaduna's investment will ultimately depend on whether the new infrastructure is accompanied by effective grassroots football development, youth training programmes, talent scouting and sustainable sports management.
