MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused some European leaders of openly preparing for a possible war with Russia, while insisting that Moscow has no aggressive intentions toward European countries.
Putin made the remarks on September 18, 2026, during a meeting of Russia’s Military-Industrial Commission, where he discussed the country’s new state armament programme and the development of its defence industry.
According to Putin, certain European leaders are using the alleged Russian threat and the war in Ukraine to justify increased military spending and their policies toward Moscow.
At the same time, Putin said Russia was ready to restore relations and cooperate with European neighbours, arguing that Moscow had “no aggressive intentions” toward Europe.
Rising Tensions
Putin's comments come as European governments continue to strengthen their defence capabilities and express concern over Russia's military activities.
European officials have also raised concerns about potential Russian drone, cyber and other hybrid attacks, while NATO members have increased attention to the security of their eastern flank.
Putin has previously warned that the deployment of European troops to Ukraine would amount to direct conflict with Russia.
Despite the increasingly strong rhetoric from both sides, there has been no announcement of an imminent war between Russia and European countries.
The latest statements are being closely watched as tensions surrounding the Russia-Ukraine conflict continue.
More updates to follow as the situation develops.
