When Liberia's civil war began in 1989, Chukwu had businesses, property and a comfortable life in the country. But as fighting spread and Nigerians found themselves trapped in increasingly dangerous areas, reports say he decided to use his own resources to help them get out.
He reportedly deployed his vessels to evacuate stranded Nigerians and spent his own money to assist those trying to escape the violence.
In one particularly striking account, Chukwu allegedly gave up his newly acquired Mercedes-Benz in an effort to secure the release of Nigerians who had been captured.
But his efforts came at an enormous personal cost.
His businesses were reportedly looted, millions in assets were lost, and the war claimed the life of his younger brother.
Yet his name remains relatively unfamiliar to many Nigerians today.
