BREAKING: Greenland, Denmark and U.S. Sign New Security Agreement
Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and U.S. President Donald Trump have signed a new security agreement strengthening the U.S. military presence in Greenland.
The agreement, signed at the United Nations headquarters in New York on September 22, reaffirms the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark while recognizing Greenland’s right to self-determination.
It gives the United States expanded military access and basing rights in Greenland, including the ability to establish additional defense areas, while restricting military or sensitive activities by countries considered adversaries of the U.S.
The agreement will take effect after the required parliamentary procedures in Denmark and Greenland.
Trump has described the agreement as giving the U.S. “permanent control” over Greenland’s security, while Danish and Greenlandic officials have emphasized that the deal respects Denmark’s sovereignty and Greenland’s right to self-determination.
