Chinese President Xi Jinping has arrived at the White House in Washington, D.C., for talks with U.S. President Donald Trump as the two leaders seek to manage tensions between the world's two largest economies.
Xi is on a three-day state visit to the United States, his first trip to the country in nearly three years. Trump personally welcomed him at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday, an unusually high-level gesture for a visiting foreign leader.
The White House meeting on Thursday is expected to focus on several major issues affecting relations between Washington and Beijing, including trade, tariffs, artificial intelligence, technology, rare-earth minerals, Taiwan and the war involving Iran.
Trade remains a central issue. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington and Beijing had reached an agreement to extend their existing trade truce, following negotiations between officials from both countries.
AI and advanced technology are also expected to feature prominently. The United States and China are competing over the development and control of advanced AI systems, while restrictions on technology exports and access to critical minerals remain points of disagreement.
Xi's visit also includes a formal state ceremony and a state dinner hosted by Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. Several prominent technology executives, including Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Sundar Pichai, Sam Altman, Jensen Huang and Tim Cook, are among the expected guests.
In a statement marking his arrival, Xi said China and the United States should be “partners, not rivals,” signaling Beijing's emphasis on dialogue despite continuing disagreements between the two powers.
The meeting is being closely watched internationally because decisions made by Washington and Beijing on trade, technology and security can have consequences far beyond the two countries.
