A solemn memorial service was held on Thursday, September 24, at All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi for Mercy Kanini’s five babies, who died days after their premature birth at Thika Level Five Hospital.
Family members, friends, church leaders and well-wishers gathered to mourn the quintuplets and support their mother and family during the emotional farewell. Comedian and activist Eric Omondi was also present and offered words of comfort to the grieving family.
The babies were born on September 13 at approximately 25 weeks of pregnancy through a rare vaginal delivery. They weighed between approximately 600 and 800 grams and were transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital for specialised neonatal care because of their extreme prematurity.
Despite intensive medical care, all five babies later died at Kenyatta National Hospital.
During the memorial service, Eric Omondi offered words of encouragement to Kanini and the family, saying: “May you have strength from Him that surpasses human understanding.”
After the service, the five small caskets left All Saints Cathedral for Migori County, where the babies are expected to be laid to rest at their father’s rural home.
The tragedy has drawn widespread sympathy across Kenya, with members of the public continuing to offer prayers and support to Mercy Kanini and her family.
