Several Premier League clubs are seeking legal advice about whether they could claim compensation from Manchester City following the independent panel's findings in the club's long-running financial rules case.
Manchester City was found guilty of a majority of the financial breaches brought against it by the Premier League. The club has indicated that it intends to appeal the findings.
The case dates back to February 2023, when City were charged following a four-year Premier League investigation into alleged financial rule breaches between 2009 and 2018. The hearing before an independent commission began in September 2024.
According to BBC Sport, some Premier League clubs had already obtained legal advice before the verdict was known about whether they could seek financial compensation if City's alleged breaches had affected their own sporting or financial outcomes.
One possible route would involve clubs arguing that City's conduct affected their league positions, European qualification or other financial opportunities. However, any compensation claims would have to be considered through the appropriate legal and Premier League processes.
The situation follows a recent case involving Everton and Burnley. Burnley successfully argued that Everton's breach of financial regulations had contributed to losses associated with relegation. Everton were subsequently ordered to pay Burnley £35 million, although the decision has been appealed.
Manchester City has maintained that the disciplinary process is still ongoing and has emphasized its expectation that the Premier League's regulatory process should be independent and fair. The club has also previously denied the allegations in the case.
The Premier League has not publicly announced the sanctions that could follow the independent panel's findings. Possible consequences could include a financial penalty or sporting sanctions, but the final outcome will depend on the next stages of the process and any appeal.
The compensation issue could therefore become another significant legal development arising from the long-running Manchester City case.
