Anthropic has disclosed to the U.S. government that Alibaba allegedly carried out the largest known AI distillation attack against its Claude models to date.
According to the company, operators allegedly linked to Alibaba generated 28.8 million exchanges with Claude using nearly 25,000 fraudulent accounts between April and June 2026 in an effort to extract the model's capabilities and train competing AI systems.
Anthropic says the campaign targeted Claude's advanced reasoning and software engineering capabilities, describing it as the largest such incident the company has ever detected. Alibaba has not publicly responded to the allegations.
