Education advocate Alex Onyia has claimed that Nigeria has been delisted as a full participant in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), with the country now reportedly attending only as an observer nation.
According to Onyia, the development followed the Federal Ministry of Education's alleged failure to fund Nigeria's participation through the National Mathematical Centre for four consecutive years.
The International Mathematical Olympiad, currently holding its finals in Shanghai, China, is regarded as one of the world's most prestigious mathematics competitions for secondary school students.
The claim has sparked concern among many Nigerians, with calls for greater investment in education and support for academically gifted students.
