The Federal Government has suspended the proposed increase in registration fees for the 2027 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) following public concerns.
The proposal sought to increase the registration fee from ₦27,500 to ₦50,000 per candidate beginning in 2027, representing an 82% increase.
According to the government, the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, has directed that the implementation of the proposed fee hike be put on hold pending further consultations with relevant stakeholders.
The decision has been welcomed by many Nigerians, especially parents, students, and education stakeholders who had expressed concerns over the proposed increase.
